When I called my mom this morning to tell her that I had a big “goose egg” on my ankle from wake-boarding yesterday she said, “Karen… you are getting too old for that stuff…”
While I don’t think I am getting too old for it… I definitely need to pay better attention to what is going on… It was a beautiful evening on the lake last night… so we decided to go wake-boarding… we had gone out on Saturday morning and I finally got a feel for getting a good pop off of the wake… I mean I was jumping really high for me.. my stomach did flip-flops the first time I really hit it right…
Fast forward to Sunday… we got to a nice part of Blackwater in front of the 4H camp and I started putting my board on… the boots are really snug which helps with control… but also ended up working against me later… as I bobbed up and down in the water… I look around at a horse chomping on some leaves on a tree… the water temperature felt great… I yelled.. “Ready!” and then I was up… I felt good right off the bat… after all of the rain we had on Saturday there was a ton of junk floating in the lake (logs and sticks) but navigating around it wasn’t too bad…
I leaned out to my left… and was coming in for a jump… I got so high I let go because it freaked me out… I got back up and had a pretty good run…. my arms and legs started to feel a little fatigued but I was having so much fun I just wanted to get one or two more jumps in… as I leaned out and came in.. my landing on the wake.. was more than a bobble… the board went under the water- I face planted… my right foot ripped out of the boot and the left one stayed in… I didn’t know which end was up…
As Matt was coming back after me… I got the board off my left foot and was just hanging in the water with my arms on the board as if it were a shelf… “that was the one I was looking for…” which a reference to the last “anything” we often joke about in our family…
Turns out Matt said he was turning the boat a little bit just as I was getting ready to jump.. I wasn’t paying attention and the landing got all messed up… what are my lessons here? Pay better attention… let go of the rope faster… stop when I feel tired… and perhaps avoid trying to ride like a rockstar with a marathon coming up in November… I ran 8.5 miles on Sunday before my wipe-out… so much for getting ahead… I have had ice on my ankle most of the day and am hoping for a fast recovery…
