A good friend of mine gave me a beautiful pale pink pashmina scarf from London for my birthday. I have just recently been able to wear it with the cooler temperatures we have been having… I’m wearing it right now.. not because I am cold but because I love it… and not because it is from London but because it feels like cotton candy around my neck.. so soft and comfortable.. like a favorite t-shirt or house slippers…
I think most everyone has an article of clothing that they have worn for years and years… and even though it is warn out it is still your favorite… My husband has a t-shirt that looks like it has been through a firing range on the front… little holes all over it… yet he still wears it (not out to dinner or anything like that) and when I suggested throwing it away… with a voice of concern he said “Why would you do something like that?” As if I was going to take away his only friend.
I still have my very first Virginia Tech sweatshirt my mom and I bought together right after I found out I had been accepted… it is stretched to the hilt and the stitching is coming out of some of the letters but I would never think of throwing it away…
There is something to be said for the power of comfort… when I get home from work at night the first thing I do is take off my shoes and put on my favorite house slippers… now I am really picky about house shoes… they have to fit just right.. and not look too silly… when I find a good pair I buy them… right now I rotate between three different sets… but one pair is coming apart at the toes because I also wear them out to get the paper in the morning…
Comfort can come with a high price tag… sleek luxurious cars… a hot stone massage… a trip to the Caribbean… there is nothing wrong with high dollar comfort if you can afford it but none of us can go to the Caribbean everyday of the week… a ratty old t-shirt or pashmina scarf can be a day to day comfort creator…
Some of the other simple things in life I love:
Our Dog
*The way Luckie dog tilts his head as if he is listening to our every word - (really he was born with only one ear and the vet thinks that has something to do with his head tilt)
*When Luckie who is a little old man of “108” people years still gets excited when catches the scent of a chipmunk or critter that he is too slow to ever catch. It makes me smile.. it’s almost as if I imagine him saying - “I just did that on purpose to make you look… I know I will never catch that thing.”
My monthly magazine subscriptions
*I have two health magazines I get each month and it is always an unexpected treat when I check the mail and one has arrived.
My two pairs of “real” running socks
*I have two nice pairs of socks that have extra cushioning and sweat wicking stuff… prevent blisters… you name it - they cost about 10 bucks a pair - which is why I have two - well had three but a dryer gremlin stole on of them so I have two and half pairs… they are my “long run” socks…
A good ink pen -
*It is hard to keep a pen around in a news room but I try to keep track of a good one - my husband jokes that he hides his favorite pens from me because he knows he will never see them again.
My pillow
*I take it with me whenever I can on trips. When you are used to a pillow no hotel or guest room version can compare.
I could go on and on about my simple favorite things but now I must go work on the 11:00pm news…
