* The other night Jay and I had dinner at a local restaurant… a table next to us mentioned they liked and watched WSLS 10… then one woman looked at me and said… you don’t look the same in person… I said usually people say we look smaller in person than we do on tv… she said, “I wouldn’t say that’s it.” I smiled and thanked her for watching.
* One man once e-mailed me to tell me that he HATED my hair in bold red print… and then went on to say that if he shaved his dog’s behind it would look better than my hairstyle.
* You look younger in person than you do on t.v.
* People will often tell me that I am not as “tall” as I look on tv… hmmmm… I’m sitting down..
* When I first started anchoring the news for WSLS 10 back in 1998 I was young and nervous. I anchored the morning show and apparently talked too fast for one man who followed me around a Lowe’s store as I was searching for light bulbs… and finally stood in front of my cart and said… I have to tell you something, “You talk way too fast on the news… I can’t understand a word you are saying.” I was shocked… smiled and said I would work on it.
* One day I was in the grocery store picking out produce when a man was so excited to see me he said… “Can I hug you?” It caught me off guard and then he said…my wife has already gone out to the car… “Can I go get her so she can hug you?” I guess some people think of us as family since we come into your living rooms every night.
* WSLS viewers are everywhere… a few year’s ago my husband and I were at Myrtle Beach for vacation… as we were waiting for a table at a restaurant… a very nice man from Wytheville… politely asked if I was “Karen McNew” and then went on to say they watch all of the time… very sweet.
* My hair is naturally curly.. years ago I wore it on the air that way… you remember and no it was not my best look…but one man e-mailed me to tell me I “looked like Medusa with snakes in my head.”
For the most part our viewers are the best around… I never take for granted that you allow us into your living room every night to get you caught up on news of the day and your Storm Team 10 Forecast. Thank you for all of your comments good and bad. All I ask is that they are constructive.. and if they aren’t they may end up included in a future blog :)
* On a run recently, my running partner and I made a quick pitstop at a building with a bathroom along our route… as I was standing at the sink washing my hands… sweating like crazy… hair blown left instead of right because of the horrible wind… a very nice lady did a double take and said, “Are you and announcer?” I told her that yes I worked for WSLS and was just trying to get a run in before work.
* When I first started working here I was at a local store when the clerk said she knew me from somewhere… I said, “I work for WSLS 10.” She said, “No that’t not it… you work at the bowling alley.. don’t you?” I didn’t even know where the bowling alley was…
