Summer season makes healthy eating easier

I picked up some fresh peaches while I was in downtown Roanoke for a lunch meeting… I generally eat pretty healthy but this time of year it seems easier to do…

We have had plenty of garden vegetables in the house… all of the fruits and vegetables at the grocery store even look bright and fresh… and the market was buzzing with people picking up produce of all kinds… when I asked the man at the stall I purchased mine from.. where the peaches came from he said, “My backyard…”  that was enough to sell me…

Storm Team 10 Meteorologist, Alyssa Corfont had a story the other day about how the dry weather had actually been good for the peaches and made them sweeter… I have to say my taste test backed up that bit of information…

I have been freezing some of the vegetables from the garden so we will be able to enjoy squash and corn during the winter and was actually thinking about whether I should freeze some of these peaches… that got me thinking about the winter months that seem to be coming at us way too fast… I know it feels like 100 degrees outside but trust me soon enough it will be 30 degrees with a stiff wind…

If you are thinking about changing your eating habits.. now is definitely the time to do it… because your options are plentiful… we will all have to get through the colder months with veggies from a can or the frozen food section… along with whatever is edible from the produce department… I don’t recommend the tomatoes… I find during the winter they are as flavorful as I imagine wet cardboard would be… and if you take a notion to pick up some peaches I found a couple of healthy peach smoothie recipes that may satisfy that milkshake craving without the extra guilt and fat….

Peach Smoothie
2 cups of sliced peaches
1/2 cup of fat free milk (or 1/4 fat free milk and 1/4 soy milk)
1 cup low fat peach yogurt
2 cups of ice
Blend ingredients
Garnish with a dash of nutmeg (I will probably leave out the nutmeg)

Peach Smoothie 2
2 cups unsweetened frozen sliced peaches
1/2 cup skim milk (or 1% milk if desired)
1/2 cup orange juice
1/2 cup non-fat vanilla yogurt
Blend ingredients

The fresh produce and better prices of it since a lot of good stuff is in season is one of my favorite things about the summer season.
