I have been doing a lot more local health reports these days and I can tell you the motivation for my job has spiked because of the local doctors and patients who are willing to share their stories with me and in turn with you. A young woman today thanked me for interviewing her about her digital mammogram results that showed breast cancer at age 28…. she was thanking me… I should and did thank her.
My hope is that people will make positive health decisions in their own lives because of courageous people in our area who are willing to share their experiences with different treatments and illnesses.
Kara was aware of her family history. Her mother was diagnosed with breast cancer at age 38 and died from the disease when Kara was 14 years old. She told me today that everything she had dealt with in her life to this point prepared her for coping with her breast cancer diagnosis.
Because of digital mammography and breast MRIs she decided to have a double mastectomy to drastically reduce the risk that cancer would come back. People like Kara make you realize that things like traffic delays on the way to work or rain when you don’t have an umbrella are very insignificant issues in the grand scheme of life… sometimes it doesn’t take much to add perspective.
