I got an e-mail a few days ago from one of our neighbors about the SML Polar Plunge.. he had seen the weather forecast for Sunday and said the conditions were ideal.. my husband and I should join in the fun of the SML Polar Plunge that is sponsored by the Smith Mountain Lake Ski Club…. hmmmmm I thought… that could be fun.. before I knew it my husband and I were putting on our swim suits before we left the house on Sunday to head over to the Tanners…

Ginger and Tom Tanner are the kind folks who let people invade their dock every year on January 1st to wake-board or water-ski off their dock.. and enjoy some food and fun with other people who love the lake and the fun of riding on top of the water.. even when the water temperature is hovering around 50 degrees…

I believe this past New Year’s Day was the best ever… up until now our record for “extending” the wake-board season was October 16th.. we “blew that out of the water” with the January 1st jaunt.. the water temperature definitely got our attention but in a way that was so exciting and exhilarating!!

This was the 19th year for the event… this year’s mild air temperature brought out the biggest showing yet… more than 30 people came out to water-ski or wake-board… there were two boats going at once.. taking people out and back… Most people wore some kind of wetsuit.. but not everyone did… I believe the youngest participant was 11 years old…

It certainly made for a New Year’s Day we will never forget!
