I had one of the best weekends of the summer this past weekend - yesterday was absolutely beautiful… we went to one of our favorite spots on the lake (Bull Run) and wakeboarded… floated… I packed a pic nic snack and we just enjoyed talking and taking in how beautiful this untouched part of the lake is… we even went to sleep early last night because we were just worn out from a full day of fun…
So… I wake up this morning and put a half a bagel in the toaster oven… I like to slice the half in half so it is like bagel toast (yes I do have some strange eating habits) - keep in mind our toaster oven has a little dial that you have to “guess-timate” the time you are setting it for… anyway I sat down to read an article in my Runner’s World Magazine.. you know you have toasted something too long when you can actually smell it…
I got up to find half of one piece of bagel toast was black… the other was black around the edges… I could have just started over but decided to break off the really burnt part and then just scrape off the other black parts - as I did this I thought of my grandma who used to say she liked burnt toast - that it tasted better with her coffee (not sure if she really liked it but she always ate it that way)...
As I was toasting the bagel I had a small piece of brie cheese that had been wrapped in saran wrap - I laid it on top of the toaster oven to get warm.. (HELLO… saran wrap is plastic… and melted a nice coat of gloss onto the top of the toaster oven) - clearly I was not thinking or had not had enough coffee… then later I grabbed my coffee cup that I thought was empty… to throw in the dishwasher - (it wasn’t empty and splashed coffee all over the counter… uuuuggggghhh.)
I did manage to make it to work today in one piece and I got in a great quarter mile repeat, interval training run at the gym after all of the breakfast drama… the marathon is getting closer and in two weeks we do our first really long run - 15 miles…
Even with the little spills and burns… I sit here and think about some of the people I interviewed last week for stories… people who have been really sick or are really sick… people who have had to make major sacrifices and gone through real suffering… and I am humbled and a little ashamed of the small tantrum I threw in the kitchen as I continued to make stupid choice… after stupid choice… this morning.
Thankfully, the day has only continued to get better - if you had a typical Monday… I empathize with you and hope that your day and week only continue to get better too!
