Pictures from Haiti are so hard to look at

While I was working out at the gym this morning a man asked me if we would be busy covering what was going on in Haiti… he then said… oh that is national and you cover local stories so I guess not…

When I got to work and saw all of the stories our reporters were working on relating to the earthquake that conversation flashed through my mind and I realized we were busy covering stories related to Haiti… from our local churches to our local universities… there are several groups of people from our area in or near Port au Prince…

We interviewed a Salem woman who had marked a map of the country with yellow tabs for people she had confirmed were okay and red for those she had not been able to reach… most of the red flags were near the epicenter of the quake… while there is always hope for miracles… but when you see the news reports about bodies being stacked in the streets because there are so many people dead… it chips away at that hope…

Chairs and sheets being used to create make-shift tents for shelter… the walking wounded marching aimlessly… buildings collapsed like cardboard boxes…  one can only imagine the chaos being felt… and the pictures of the injured children may be the toughest to look at…

In a country that already had so many needs… it is hard to imagine how the ever widening voids will be filled… one can only hope that some order will be restored and that those who need medical care and assistance will get it as soon as possible.
