Our pets are part of the family

October 15th was the one year mark for losing our little friend Luckie… He was 14.. which I guess technically would make him “98” in people years… for a 98 year old man he got around pretty good… but his health began fading fast.. after having cushings for about 3 years.. he developed what appeared to be some kind of arthritis in his back leg that caused it to give out.. he got a sinus infection that lingered for months… he had good days and bad..

Eventually the bad outweighed the good… and on our last trip to the vet.. we didn’t know for sure we were making the right decision.. I’m not sure you can ever really know for sure.

Dr. Hickman asked us this question,“Does he still do the things that make him happy?”

We looked at each other and immediately we knew.  Ol’ Luck hadn’t greeted us at the door in a very long time.  He was a beagle with short legs and a big paws.  He used to love for us to come home and throw the toy back and forth with him.  He ran like a rabbit.. both front legs and both back legs touched the ground in unison…

We haven’t adopted another dog… in part because we are both very busy but also because losing a pet creates a space in your heart.. for some people getting a new pet soon helps and some people need more time to heal… perhaps one day we will have another furry friend running around the house…image
Right now my mom’s little dog is 14… and she has good days and bad.. most of them good these days… I am so thankful for her vet who is kind and patient… I keep reminding mom that Dusty is 98 years old.. thankfully she still does the things that make her happy…
