I know money is tight for everyone… we have all started to be more selective with our spending.. the tough economic times have forced us to evaluate what is important and essential for us and what isn’t…. For instance, today on my way back to work from my lunch break I really wanted to stop at a well known coffee shop for an afternoon java treat… I decided I would not get the 2-4 dollar coffee and instead would brew some of the flavored coffee I have in my desk drawer…
Yet, I broke down and bought a nice new pair of running shoes… my old ones were about 5 months old… I run about 100 miles a month and running shoes last about 500 miles… the math shows I was due but it is hard to justify the expense… I seriously contemplated trying to stretch out my old shoes and it came to me that my running is more than exercise… it is my downtime… my time to only think about the music I am listening to or the rhythm of my feet hitting the pavement… it is my energy boost… training for my third half marathon… The Shamrock in VAB has been rewarding and satisfying for me personally… in many ways you can’t put a price tag on that… so when I divide the cost of my shoes by 5 (the number of months they last)... it comes out to about 20 dollars a month… you can’t get 6 day a week therapy for that price… even with a co-pay…
