May I please see your ID?

I typically take Claritin D during the allergy months.. I haven’t taken any for weeks now… but after a fun weekend skiing my husband has come down with a cold… he looked and sounded awful this morning… I told him I would pick up some Sudafed from the store…

Off I went in typical fashion with my to do list in hand… cold rainy grumpy day already.. but I was fighting off the grumpies because we had a great weekend… I got some laundry done and was looking forward to making some meals before work to go with the 90 day fitness challenge I recently signed up for…

I got all of my shopping done and went to the pharmacy to get Zicam and Sudafed… Zicam off the shelf… Sudafed from the pharmacist… I opened my wallet and it clicked that my ID was still zipped in the pocket of my ski jacket that I wasn’t wearing (while we were heading down the mountain if something happened to me I want ski patrol to know my name)... I told the pharmacist… she looked at me like I was crazy… I said my husband has a bad cold… I won’t have time to come back out and he won’t be out because he is so sick… blank stare…

I said what if people don’t have a drivers license she quipped, “We don’t give it to them.”

Then, one of the other pharmacists who seemed to have more patience said that those people typically have an ID card…

I felt an inner simmer… I was being made to feel like I was doing something wrong… when all I wanted was some cold medicine for Matt… I couldn’t help but mumble as I walked away.. “Because of the “meth heads”.. normal people have to suffer…” should I have kept my thoughts to myself.. yes… will I ever use this pharmacy again.. no.. I didn’t need the attitude… especially on a rainy Monday…

I have had viewers contact me in the past with similar venting messages on this issue.. my response has always been that it seems to be the best system for trying to curb abuse of drugs.. but today… I agreed with those folks… and owe you an apology… it is frustrating for people who are not out to abuse these medicines to be not only inconvenienced.. but to be told you can’t have a medicine that you know will help someone you love…

I was talking to a woman at the gym tonight who had similar frustrations.. her take was.. “If people are trying to run a meth operation.. wouldn’t they hi-jack a truck…” my small box of Claritin D doesn’t seem like it should be such a big deal… who knows… I would love to hear your take on this one…
