A new study led by researchers at University of Oxford and published in the ‘European Heart Journal’ finds eating your fruits and veggies may cut your risk of a common type of heart disease.
British researchers looked at the diet and health of 300,000 Europeans over an eight year period. Those who ate at least eight portions of fruit and vegetables a day were 22-percent less likely to die of ischemic heart disease than those who ate fewer than three portions a day.
However, it’s unclear if the vegetables themselves are responsible for this effect or if people who eat healthy diets have lower rates of heart disease.
This story was featured in health team and got me thinking about how 8 portions is a lot of fruits and veggies. I went on-line to the USDA website with recommendations for the most beneficial balance of fruits and veggies each day and it seems like a lot. But, the USDA goes even further with its produce breakdown and gives a recommended amount based on age and gender.
How many vegetables?
How much fruit?

Karen, You have posted some very helpful useful information in this Blog and I hope that you get some more comments on this. Heart Disease and Cancer are the two leading causes of death here in America. I have lost several family members and friends to Heart Disease my own mother died of Heart Disease in 1988 so this hits very close to home for me and in less than a month will be her Birthday February 27th and believe it or not also the same date that my father passed away in 2000. So let us all continue to pray that someday the word Heart Disease will be just a word in a medical journal and that Heart Disease it’s self will be cured in all people throughout the world.
