It’s a small world

It is not out of the ordinary for me to host or emcee charity events where door prizes are handed out… and I just got a call from my husband about something that happened at one of them months ago that I had all but forgotten about…

A child from the group had offered to pull the numbers from the basket and then I would call them out… one of the first prizes went to the little girl’s friend… it was a small group so I didn’t think anything of it… then one of the next prizes went to the little girl’s mom… I realized the girl was looking in the basket for numbers she recognized and then picking those numbers for me to call out… what do you do in that instance?  I mean there is a large group of people focused on me and once she drew the number of her sister… I thought it might be a little obvious what was going on and didn’t know if people would be frustrated that they didn’t have much of a chance at winning anything…

In this particular instance I had a flash back to second grade… we were playing some silly classroom game and I cheated… because I wanted to help someone else win the game… the teacher called attention to it in front of the whole class… it was awful and embarrassing… I did not want to embarrass this young girl…

So…. I politely looked at her in the eye and with a smile I said, “Sweetheart, let’s try it this way…” I lifted the basket up over her head so she couldn’t see the numbers before she picked them.

We gave out the rest of the door prizes and I went home barely giving the instance a second thought… well… it turns out that little girl is the daughter of one of my husband’s former co-workers…. and apparently everyone was aware of what was happening… and her Dad got a huge kick out of how I handled the situation and had a big laugh telling Matt about it…

The world is small…
