There are so many factors that come into play with the self check out lanes at grocery stores and discount stores… my most recent shopping trip landed me in the self check out lane for a number of reasons… I was on my dinner break so I had a time constraint… the other lanes had lines… and the self checkout was wide open…
But really did I gain that much time? Probably not.
I am convinced that the person who invented the self check out lanes was playing on our desire to be in control of our own check out destiny.
Can I really scan a bar code faster than a person who has been through training and does it numerous times daily? Probably not.
I spend more time trying to get the “attendants” attention because the computer is telling me to “place my item in the bag” in the check out area… I was standing in the checkout area. The bags holder things aren’t sensitive enough to realize I placed something that weighs next to nothing in the bag already.
Then, I start to realize that perhaps it would have been faster to just stand in line… Are other people who are in line secretly smirking at my self check out issues because they decided to go the patient route and take their check out chances? Probably not.
Even still I finally get my last item scanned… I select debit to pay… type in my pin number… get my receipt… Yay I’m done.
I go to grab the cart to put it back where it belongs and realize… I forgot one item!!!!!
So the process begins again…. Haste makes waste right?
