It has come to my attention that comments we make about the weather can really cause some people to share their strong opinions about our opinions… I completely understand that when it comes to news coverage our opinions don’t count and should not be obvious in any way but to me weather and sports don’t share the same unbiased category…
When I introduce Jeff for the weather during the news sometimes but not always I will add in a little remark about the weather of the day… some examples include: It’s really hot out there… I forgot my umbrella even though you told me I would need it… The wind has been awful today… We need some rain… It is a beautiful sunny day outside great for walking the dog or going for a run…
But some people don’t like for us to call a sunny day beautiful because they assume it means that we hate rain… or don’t want us to talk about how hot it is because they interpret it as us “complaining” about the weather… I like to think of this part of the news cast as my conversation with Jeff and the viewer and in a conversation we can all say whatever we want… we don’t have to agree but would you ever “police” a friend about their comments during your conversation…
Would you look at your neighbor and say something as rude as “I hate to hear you complain about the weather.. you always have something to say about the weather really would you just shut up about it?” But for some reason (maybe it’s the heat) we are fair game for the jabs.
In the grocery store the other day I was talking with the cashier who was remarking about how hot it had been… over 100 degrees on her thermometer… I simply remarked back to her that I noticed the same thing on my car’s thermometer… the man behind me - barked “Awwhh it’s SUMMER for goodness sakes!”
My conversation that didn’t even include him had caused a strong opinion and emotion… it was more than rude it was shocking to me that someone would interupt another conversation they weren’t a part of to make the two parties feel like they were in some way saying something stupid… when in fact we were sharing our perspective and our opinion… I can’t say what I wanted to say to him…
I just smiled and said,“Well maybe if we had gotten an actual spring it wouldn’t be so bad.”
As I finished loading my groceries in my car… he was passing by on the way to his with a smirk on his face and said something to the effect of have a nice day… my response again with a smile, “Enjoy the heat.”
My mom used to say “kill them with kindness” sometimes I wish people and viewers would do the same thing to me :)
