Hanging on by a thread

I have a pair of blue jeans that are beyond need of repair… they are so worn out that the front part of the legs feels like a soft cotton t-shirt and is just as thin… not only that… each knee is completely exposed because there are matching holes on both sides… even with the holes in the knees I used to wear them to places like the grocery store…

I tried to replace them by going back to the store where I originally bought them… the young size 0 girl looked at me funny when I gave her the “name” of the jeans and described them… after I finished and added they had a “button fly” the girl softly said… “We don’t carry that style anymore” which is code for “WOW those are like SO not in-style anymore.. Why would you want to replace them?”

She then showed me the “new” version of my favorite “old” pair of jeans… I tried them on… and bought them because they were the “next generation” and I thought they would grow on me… I still have them but they didn’t even come close to replacing my favorite pair…  which now have a hole above the hole in one knee that has a Key West patch on it… I had to stop wearing them in public when a hole formed under one of the back pockets…

I can only wear them around the house now… and still do on most weekends…  last night I set out to buy a denim patch to fix the hole in the back… so I could go back to wearing them in public… I read in one of my fashion magazines that jeans with “patches” are in this year… I’m not one to follow trends but what the heck… if it means I get to keep wearing my favorite jeans…

When I told a co-worker about my plan to patch the hole in my jeans to wear to the VT game this weekend… he asked me why I didn’t just go buy a new pair… I explained patches are in… he said patches on new jeans Karen… not patches on ratty old worn out jeans… then proceeded to say some people might think it is a little odd or sad that “Karen McNew” doesn’t have any decent jeans to wear to a football game… he’s probably right…

I’m not wearing them to the game… but I am still patching them… and remain in search of a replacement for them after about 10 years of searching… I need to take a picture to go with this blog to do them justice:)
