One of our producers got her long hair cut short… she had it all pinned back because she doesn’t like it… she mentioned that it resembled a mushroom… many of us can relate to a bad hair cut… bad color job… you name it and I have probably had it… in my 12 years at WSLS 10 I have reported on a lot of different issues… each day when I come to work I focus on trying to contribute my best efforts to helping with the delivery of news of the day but still… I get a lot of comments on my hair from folks… I don’t mind it at all… I just find it interesting…

Those comments used to be less than favorable… but apparently I have found a hairstyle that seems to agree with most of our viewers… at least it seems to agree with me better than most of my past hair “styles” and I use the term loosely because there have been many mane mishaps… here are a few of the highlights:

*My senior year in high school I was obsessed with the movie pretty woman - I died my very long… very curly… very blond hair auburn… not only was the color bad… it took two boxes and I used the bathroom in my brother’s townhouse.. white rugs… looked like I had committed a brutal crime afterward.. rugs covered in red hair dye.

*Went through a period of short hair denial… my hair is naturally curly and thick and for a while that is how I wore it for the news… viewers were relentless with comments like - you look like you have snakes in your head and it appears you just rolled out of bed and came into work… I wore it curly because it took me so long to straightening it I thought I might get carpal tunnel syndrome or something…

*Out of short hair denial.. got a shorter do and was on the way to a better look… I thought… without going through the painful details I finally have a “style” that seems to be both professional and relatively easy to take care of…

Most people are very kind in their comments and have come to understand why some of those comments focus on our appearance.. I think in part it is because at the end of the day you want your news without distraction… and sometimes there are certain aspects of a person’s appearance that can be distracting… or perhaps you just like to tell us what you think about how we look… either way constructive comments are always welcome.
