Gound cover needed

So… we still have a lot of work to do outside around our house… this past weekend we spread 16 yards of mulch for the second weekend in a row… it is gratifying to look at and it sure does make for a sound night’s sleep but we are a little “over it”

I can’t wait to get to the part of gardening that includes pretty flowers and shrubs… right now the brown carpet we have installed in our back yard is just the foundation - I am ready for the “house” to be built…

Matt and I have decided we can’t do this every year… it is just too much… so we are investigating different ground cover options for the large areas that are nothing but mulch right now… we have narrowed it down to periwinkle and ivy… we are leaning toward periwinkle because it is supposed to be easier to control but we also want something that smothers weeds pretty good…  the areas get a lot of sun…Any suggestions?

I have a couple of small walls where I am going to plant brightly colored phlox… other than that I am open to possibilities..

Update - Hokie tulips are hanging in there but instead of 24 flowers I have only about 8-10 thanks to our lovely but *hungry* deer in the neighborhood…

The ground cover you mentioned takes a while to grow. If you want impact this year try morning glories or clemantis.  Even though clemantis is thought of as a climbing vine, without support it will spread across the ground quite beautifully.  Another option might be a veggie like green beans or cherry tomatoes.  They will spread across the ground quickly and thickly if not supported.

Plants are expensive and one consideration should how quickly they will multiply.  Daylilies, irises, and gladiolas multiply quickly and will save you a lot of money in the long run.

happy gardening!
