Here is some perspective from my story today about sunscreen. I will be on vacation next week and wearing my spf without worry.
A recent study about how a common ingredient in sunscreen may increase our chances for skin cancer got our attention.
Should we stop wearing our sunscreen until final Food and Drug Administration results come out this fall?
WSLS checked with a local dermatologist who has over 30 years of experience in the Roanoke Valley to find out.
Dr. John Kaufman says right now we should “not worry a bit about it.“
He says, “There may be a surprise… as I said once this fall they come out with a report… we may know differently. I think it would be wrong to sort of stop using sunscreen until the report comes out. It is better to continue.
The ingredient in question is called retinyl palmitate and is derived from Vitamin A
Dr. Kaufman says keep wearing sunscreen and re-apply every 2 hours.
For some perspective, he says all it takes is a half hour outside in the heat of the day *without* sunscreen to cause sun damage.
