Gender selection “breakthrough”

During our 5pm health segment we featured a national story about “modern families” being able to choose whether they will have a boy or girl during the invitro fertilization process…  I know some people who have been through this process because without it they would not be able to have a baby of their own… the couple I am thinking of in particular have wanted a child for many years and have tried many alternatives but finally determined that invitro was the best route for them to try…

From the feedback I have received from them… choosing the sex of that baby is the last on the list of considerations… all they want is to raise a child in a loving environment… give that baby all they can as far as love and opportunity… and whether it is a boy or girl is irrelevant…

It causes me to question “medical breakthroughs”  should we perform procedures just because they are possible?

The story went on to say that the clinic offering the procedure in Texas has one important rule… “you must already have at least one child at home, you can then select the opposite sex to balance the family.”

Balance the family?  How do you explain to your daughter that you wanted a boy instead of another girl… to “balance things out” and the same goes for telling your son that he is getting a little sister instead of a little brother because you didn’t want two boys?

Maybe you don’t tell your children… maybe you don’t tell anyone…  or maybe you tell everyone because you think it is such a good idea…  I don’t have children… I am merely reading a health report that came down from Texas… but it seems a little over the top to me…
