The H1N1 virus extended our flu season last year and the news coverage influenza typically gets… up until last year we had pretty much heard the same bits of advice over and over again… get your flu vaccine… wash your hands… cough into your sleeve… use a tissue… I know many of you probably get tired of that same advice over and over again.. but that is the advice we get over and over again from the health department and local doctors…
The only thing I can figure is that we get the same advice because someone isn’t following it or we wouldn’t spread the flu all over the place… or would we?
I wash my hands… keep hand sanitizer in my purse… use the little wipes at the grocery store before touching my cart… try to avoid touching my face… you name it and I still have gotten sick two times in the past year… once last year in the height of H1N1 and I am convinced I had it and it was horrible… and once this year during our Your Town Series… my stomach was so upset when we broadcast from Vinton that I brought Ginger Ale in a cooler to sip during the commercial breaks… I just didn’t want to call in sick after I had already missed a day and a half of work… and did not have a fever… just something wasn’t right…
Yes… I believe all of the attention to proper hygiene probably helps keep the spread down but sometimes I also think unless we lived in a bubble there is still a pretty good chance we could get sick…
A couple of good things about the flu vaccine this year - egg recall had not impacted it as far as I have heard and there is just one vaccine to get that protects against H1N1 and Seasonal Flu… local pharmacies already have it if you are interested in getting one… I’ll probably be getting mine soon…
