My husband jokes that he is going to throw my Blackberry in the lake because of Facebook… because at any given moment he starts to tell me something.. and I will check my phone and respond to an e-mail or a Facebook message (I know this is rude and am working to curb the habit)
He will feign irritation and say, “Is it Facebook time?... It must be Facebook time..”
I respond by saying,“I heard everything you said.”
I and am a terrible liar so the blank look on my face gives me away every time..
My “personal” page sends notifications of activity on my “wall” and messages to my personal phone… I disabled that mechanism for my work Facebook page and work phone because I get a lot more notifications on that one… and would not be able to keep up.. I have to physically log onto the computer to check requests and comments etc… which I do daily.
Time-waster? Sure… to an extent it is mindless computer interaction with some people I haven’t seen in ten years and may never actually “see” again… I find though that I use FB to communicate more with my current friends and to share and receive pictures… whenever I connect with an old friend there is a flurry of back and forth computer chatter and then.. nothing… so funny… we are never going to go to lunch… or “get together” because if that were going to happen it would have already happened in the normal social atmosphere of life…
Social networking? Definitely… my “work” Facebook page has over 3,600 friends and while I don’t actually know all of the people I am “friends” with… it is another way for viewers to give us feedback and story ideas and get information.. and I honestly pay more attention to this page than my personal one these days…
For instance tonight a woman asked me about how to go about scheduling a station tour… a woman from Vinton was looking for one of the Your Town Stories we did last week… and it is an easy way for people to let us know what they think about us and our news… instead of sending an impersonal “e-mail” they can ask a “friend” and I think that makes us more approachable to some extent…
Saturday… Matt was grilling when I took a plate out to him for the chicken… he was typing on his Blackberry… I had to wait…
I jokingly said, “It must be Face book time. Is it Face book time?”
He said, “I never do this… so I’m allowed.”
Perhaps my habit is migrating.
