I have had the honor of helping with the tree lighting in downtown Roanoke for Dickens of a Christmas in the past and helped judge the parade one year and the weather is always a toss up…
The year I judged the parade it was so cold… the hot coffee I was drinking spilled on the table in front of me and turned to ice… the tree lighting has had its own interesting moments too… one year we counted down and nothing happened when we flipped the switch.. no lights… I can’t remember how they finally got turned on.. but I just remember thinking.. uh oh… now what do we do…
WSLS 10 has been a big part of the event since I can remember.. and to me it is fitting since the station is located in downtown and all of the festivities focus on downtown… and the weather this year will be cold but not too frigid and very little wind.. so it should feel like Christmas…
This year I interviewed the family who donated the tree that is forty years old and forty feet high… for more on the story of how this year’s Christmas tree came to be the focus of the star city watch WSLS at 6:00pm Friday December 3rd as we introduce you to the families involved and countdown to the tree lighting at 6:20.. if you are downtown and want to see the story… it will be posted to http://www.wsls.com late Friday evening.
