Deer Drama

I drive about 26 miles home at night and it is always dark when I leave work… last year I hit a deer… or I should say it hit me… it faired much better than my Volvo… I am careful on the roads at night but last night was like wild kingdom hit my driving route….

The first critter to cross my path was a raccoon… I hadn’t seen one in ages and almost didn’t recognize what it was until I got closer to it… he was just sitting crouched over on the two solid yellow lines… I slowed down and veered around him… I continue for another few miles… and then off to the right with a drunk swagger comes a opossum from the right side of the road… a tapped the gas just a little to get around him before he hit pavement… I thought man it is an active nature night and should have figured there would be more obstacles ahead… I was coming around a curve into a straightaway…and there is was… not a baby deer or a doe but a rather large buck with antlers - poised on the right facing toward the road… it was as if someone was about to fire a starting gun and it was going to race me… because as I slowed down it started to take off… not fast.. just a bit of a gallop… I held my breath thinking oh no… I really don’t want to hit this deer - I don’t want to kill it… I don’t want to wreck my car… man this stinks…. I think it cleared my path by about 2 or 3 feet… which may sound like a lot but when you are behind the steering wheel it is too close for comfort…

After missing the deer I said a little prayer of thanks and continued on my way… thankfully there were no more animals to dodge… but if you are driving at night or dusk you may have noticed the deer too… if not be careful.
