If you want to be able to drive a boat or jet ski on Smith Mountain Lake you will eventually have to take a boater safety course… I spent a full Saturday sitting in a classroom learning the ins and outs of 6 different chapters in order to pass a final exam on all that we had covered… I absolutely hate tests of any kind and was a little anxious about taking the course… my husband took it several years ago and got a 100 on the test… he grew up coming to SML every weekend of most every summer and really knows the rules of the water so it was no surprise that he aced it… he wanted me to take the course and since it was being offered for free on a Saturday when I could attend he suggested that he would come take it with me… if you had been in the class or if you have taken it then you know just how nice this gesture was…
Right now there is some talk about people who rent boats or jet skis merely having to watch a short video before hitting the lake… I certainly hope given the complex information covered in this course that a stricter requirement is put in place… while I didn’t enjoy giving up my Saturday I understand that any measure taken to ensure safety on the water is to be appreciated… and I hope that all of the people who use the lake for fun are as aware of the rules as those who have taken the full course…
