This morning I made breakfast for me and Matt and I had egg whites and made him an omelet… as I was cooking the eggs… Matt said, “Make sure you get them really done inside…” he had concerns about salmonella and the egg recall we keep hearing so much about…
I told him we had reported that Virginia stores didn’t get any of the eggs… he said he thought that might of changed… we looked at the paper and there was an article about the recall with a picture that had our brand of eggs along with two others and a “Recall Notice” hanging from the shelf… but we couldn’t tell what the notice said and didn’t know if some details had changed that we weren’t aware of…
A couple of years ago Matt was terribly sick and we are nearly certain it was salmonella… and it was worse than awful… after about 5 dyas he finally started to feel a little better but he was so sick and it was Christmas… the experience was miserable for him… so he tries very hard to make sure he avoids any risk of getting food poisoning of any kind…
I skimmed the article and found there was no itemized listing that I saw of the egg brands affected…
I told Matt that I felt comfortable eating the eggs and really thought his were okay too… but what should have been a perfectly wonderful Monday morning breakfast… was somewhat hampered because our food industry can’t seem to ensure that mass quantities of food remain salmonella free…
I sarcastically made the comment… “Guess I am going to have to stop buying eggs…”
Every time there is a food recall of this magnitude we all become leary of the items on our grocery list… I eat spinach now but it still isn’t my favorite salad item like it used to be… then there was the tomato recall… I can’t tell you the last time I bought a tomato from the grocery store… and we can’t forget the peanut butter recall that had local ties… I rarely buy energy bars that are “peanut butter” flavored because so many of them were on the list of recalled items that may have been contaminated…
The FDA says it needs more power to police food manufacturers and their food safety practices… as a consumer… I’m wondering what is taking so long to make that happen… how many more massive recalls do we need to tell us that something more needs to be done to keep our food supply contamination free.
