A few weeks ago I was at my gym running on the treadmill… the machines face a bunch of windows into the parking lot… I see a guy with his back to the windows smoking… he is dressed in workout attire complete with a sweatband around his head… I thought.. “Is he doing what I think he is doing?” Is he really smoking outside the gym? Did he just finish his workout?
Then… I look up and he is no longer on the sidewalk outside but walking by my treadmill.. he then plops down on the stationary bike and continues his workout… really?
Then… my husband was at the gym near our house.. (different location) and said on his way inside there were a couple of women outside smoking before going in for an exercise class… really?
There is no question that smoking is not healthy… and I am not trying to judge here… I understand that nicotine is a highly addictive substance and know that quitting is a hard thing for people to do… and there are some people who say they will never quit because they just don’t want to..
I can’t help but see the obvious reality that the workouts these people are “going to do” or in the first case are “in the middle of doing” would be so much easier and more enjoyable without breathing the taste and smell of cigarettes..
I guess some exercise is better than no exercise and perhaps a step in the right direction for people may be motivated to quit someday…
As with many… if not all addictions that step has to be taken because you want to quit.. not because someone else wants you to.. for anyone who fights an addiction daily and wins that battle.. congratulations to you… you are to be commended.. and hang in there.
