I’m doing a story tonight at 6 that was primarily news gathered and fact checked using anonymous sources.
Not everybody’s a big fan of using these types of sources.
I think even Roanoke DSS director Jane Conlin asked me during our phone interview something to the effect of “Why stay anonymous? Why not go on the record and speak up?”
There are a myriad of different reasons why journalists must sometime protect sources.
I can’t go into any specifics here.
Generally the source wants to stay anonymous for fear of any repercussions that might come after the information is released.
I can tell you that this story we put together on Aveion Lewis’s CHIP file didn’t come together in a day… or even a week.
This was a story I had been working on for quite some time now.
After I obtained the file, I fact checked several of its elements using my trial notes and court records.
As a journalist, I had the obligation to report the new information I had in the Aveion Lewis case.
The story is fair and I believe its balanced.
I’ll leave any debate on the points and counterpoints in the story to you.
