What happened when I turned football off and quality time with son on during New Year’s Day

Sometimes you need to remember that turning the TV off can be a lot of fun.

I’m writing this understanding that I want you to watch TV or else I may be out of work.

But it was January 2nd, or the actual “New Year’s Day” for college football fans since the NFL owns Sundays, and the holiday fell on a Sunday this year.

I had the day off (thanks to news director, Melissa Preas, because I didn’t ask for it).

My wife took our youngest son, 6 month old Tuck, to work for a little while because he was napping and she had some stuff to do.

Plus… she’s sort of naturally equipped to feed him when he’s hungry, whereas I’m not.

Penn State-Houston was already in the second quarter.

South Carolina-Nebraska and Georgia-Michigan State had just kicked off.

I settled on the couch for a fun day!

Then I remembered something my wife said a few days earlier:  “Why don’t you play with Jack (our 4 year old son) while you’re off?”

I feel guilty now that she had to tell me that.  That’s something I should’ve been planning already.

So off went the TV and I went to Jack.

We started off with about 20 minutes of playing “War!”

It was my team of Iron Man, two of those dudes from one of those action video games (HALO I think), and Astro Boy.

I thought I would dominate since all Jack had was three of those cheap ninjas by wife bought him at the dollar store.

It was back and forth and then Jack broke out his secret weapon:  a dinosaur!

We then proceeded to build a jail out of his Legos in order to hold the evil Iron Man, Astro Boy, and HALO dudes captive.

Afterward, we set up targets to shoot those foam darts I bought him for his Nerf “shoot guns” as he calls them.

That was fun and we made a complete mess!

Overall I have to say it was the most enjoyable hour of my New Year’s holiday.

The football games were crappy anyway.

Except for the Spartans and Bulldogs who went into overtime.

But that’s what SportsCenter’s for… to see the highlights… right?
