Someone asked me today if I thought the government’s wasting its time and our tax dollars going after Roger Clemens.
My response was simple: no.
The feds have already convicted former Olympic sprinter Marion Jones for lying to the FBI in the past.
Charges against Barry Bonds for allegedly doing the same thing to a federal grand jury are still going through the pipeline.
Even locally we’ve had high profile elected officials convicted of lying to federal authorities (remember former Henry County sheriff Frank Cassell?).
It’s pretty easy here folks—- you can’t lie to Congress, a FBI agent, the Secret Service, the IRS, anybody connected with the government.
If we simply ignored what Clemens is alleged to have done then what else is next?
If we forget about Clemens then what message does that send?
That it’s okay for the next sworn witness to lie to the House subcommittee on foreign relations (or whatever subcommittee you would like to stick in there)?
It’s also clear to me that Clemens finally ticked off the wrong people.
Remember he didn’t *have to* testify before the House committee on oversight and government reform back in 2008.
He volunteered.
In my opinion, his lawyer Rusty Hardin, ought to be indicted for the “worst lawyer in the world!”
How could he let his client do this?
If I’m ole Rusty back in 2008, I’m handcuffing Clemens to his weight bench until the committee meeting is over.
Bottom line is we have to after guys (or girls) who lie to Congress. It’s illegal and should be prosecuted.
If Clemens is indeed innocent, then I’m confident the system will not fail him.
And if he’s guilty, I’m confident the system will not fail us.
