I’ve been one of the reporters covering Jeff Young since we first met him back in late January 2008.
I can remember the hair standing up on the back of my neck when I found a search warrant in Roanoke City circuit court linking Young to the Tom Farrell hit and run case.
The search warrant was for medical records for a Floyd County woman investigators said Young ran down with a car, then got out and beat her with a stick.
Of course a jury found Young not guilty on all counts in the Tom Farrell case.
To this day, the Farrell case is closed for Roanoke County police.
Investigators firmly believe they have their man.
The lead investigator on the case has since retired and will soon be going overseas as a private contractor to help our troops.
It took a jury panel in Floyd County only a few hours to vote to convict Young for hitting the woman and beating her.
It’s one of those stories will there probably won’t be much of a happy ending for anybody.
Young will likely spend the majority of his 30s and 40s incarcerated.
Some tell me he’ll need mental help for the rest of his life.
Tom Farrell’s father lost a husband and father.
I believe Mrs. Farrell attended the entire Floyd County trial.
I expect she’ll be there tomorrow too—- when a judge could sentence Young to 16 and a half years in prison.
Young’s Floyd County victim still has some physical problems and still may be having nightmares.
It didn’t stop her from recently getting married.
But all three of these families will never be the same.
Tomorrow may put a legal end to Jeff Young’s story but the longer I do this the more I realize some stories have no endings.
