Random thoughts including agreeing with Jay Warren & ridiculous pro athletes

It’s amazing how much mental clarity you get from taking a week’s vacation isn’t it?

Most Monday mornings it takes until at least noon before I remember what my name is, but this Monday morning I picked up on two keen cerebrial nuggets for today’s post.

I have to agree with Jay Warren on MSNBC constantly withholding key information from viewers.  As I watched multiple reports this morning on the Wikileaks Afghanistan leak this morning, I noticed MSNBC guilty of this crime again on it’s morning show “Morning Joe.”  In conversation about the topic I watched this morning,  it was never once mentioned Wikileaks is an anti-war website.  Sure they got their hands on 91,000 leaked documents on the Afghan War, but ask yourself this—- how did the national media have time to digest all 91,000 pages in just one morning?  Answer—- they read Wikileaks press release.

To their credit, FOX News and CNN both explained to viewers Wikileaks stance on the war during live segments between 7 and 8 AM this morning.

We need to tell MSNBC that sometimes what we don’t know can hurt us.

Why is everyone suddenly picking on Cowboys wide receiver Dez Bryant?  I mean this kid has done everything right.  The so-called “personality risk” was the first first round draft pick to sign, got into camp on time, in shape, and at weight, and has stayed out of the headlines so far for any bad behavior.  Suddenly I’m listening to ESPN’s “Mike and Mike in the Morning” on my drive to work and they’re already picking on him about refusing to carry Roy Williams’s shoulder pads after practice.  Are you kiddin’ me?  One of the NFL’s most over-rated wide receivers of all time complaining to the media that a rookie won’t carry his shoulder pads?  This is why guys like Roy Williams will always be chumps and guys like Miles Austin (on the other end of the formation at the wide receiver spot) will always outperform loud mouths like Williams.

I’ve known many reporters who get hired straight out of school in this line of work.  Some have been great (former reporter Lindsey Henley comes to mind), but how well would it have worked if I’d have asked Henley or Candice Nelson (I believe she also got hired right after graduating from Virginia Tech) to carry my reporter notebook after a mayor’s press conference just because they were “rookies?”  Get my point?  Sometimes pro athletes are ridiculous.  ESPN needs more prospective than just that of former or current pro athletes.  But then my problems lately with ESPN are well documented (read previous posts).
