Parents prove you can put up a fight against city hall

It’s not a good thing when you have to write a script 15 minutes before a show but sometimes you have to.

That’s what happened to me Monday night with a script on the latest happenings regarding the Blacksburg high school roof collapse.

The Montgomery County board of supervisors meeting discussing the issue started at 7 p.m.

By 10:45 it still wasn’t over.  In fact it didn’t end until after midnight.

In the end the supervisors voted to essentially reverse a prior decision.  The majority voted to take another look at building a brand new Blacksburg high school.

This goes to show that a motivated citizenry can sometimes indeed fight city (or in this case, county) hall.

I still believe this might be turning into a Victory Stadium type situation but we’ll see.

The one big problem I foresee is that the longer this takes the more it increases the chance high school students at Blacksburg will still be going to the middle school come the fall of 2012 (at this rate I think 2011 is pretty much out).

But every Blacksburg high school student I’ve talked to (granted it hasn’t been many, but still a few) likes going to the middle school more than attending the old high school.

It’ll be interesting to see if parents can stay motivated in what’s looking to be a very lengthy process, a process which could turn even more political next year when some supervisors are up for re-election.
