Keeping composure can sometimes be a challenge

We often cover some difficult stories in this line of work.

I sometimes see some pretty awful things.

It never used to get to me that much until I got married and had kids.

A few weeks after my first son, Jack, was born, I can remember covering a story about a father losing a child, I believe it was to the Iraq War.

When I got back to the newsroom, all the sudden, I had to go into the bathroom… and I just lost it.

I started sobbing for a few minutes.

I was asked about my “red eyes” by a co-worker.  I told her I had a sneezing attack—- probably allergies.

I lied.

I’ve never told anyone this story before.

It makes me really appreciate those police officers and victims’ family members who can keep their composure so well in difficult situations.

I had to shallow some emotions today.

It’s part of the job.

But I’ve learned over the years that you have to deal with those emotions somewhere.

I guess that’s what I’m doing here.

Very sweet of you to share what to most of us would be natural. Nice to know you have that kind of compassion. It shows in your reporting, Scott. Keep up the kind, caring way you bring us the news.
I really appreciate it… and, YOU.
