I’ve been in this business a long time now (11 years this month) but tomorrow will be a first.
I’ll be part of our WSLS 10 On Your Side team covering Hurricane Earl.
We’ll be heading out bright and early for Atlantic Beach, North Carolina.
We’re staying at the Sheraton on the beach. I hear they even have a pier.
Of course this won’t be a vacation. I anticipate a lot of work. I mean a lot!
We’ll likely be doing live shots not only for WSLS but also most, if not all, other Media General stations (Media General owns WSLS).
I’m thinking the live shots will start during everybody’s morning show (5 AMish) and continue all the way until the 11 PM shows.
Despite working for four years in Myrtle Beach, I’ve never covered an actual hurricane.
We had several barely miss us in Myrtle. I believe I covered a Tropical Depression once.
But this will be a new experience for me and photographer/satellite truck operator Mike Secrest.
My other colleague going with us, Brian Robinson, has covered a hurricane before (Hurricane Isabel in 2004 I believe).
I’ll be tweeting and updating Facebook as well so follow along if you would like.
I’ll also try to email in a couple of quick entries for this blog too.
I’ve been told to expect to be in Atlantic Beach through at least Friday night.
My goals are to give you a good look at the waves, winds, and storm damage (if we get any).
This has the potential to be a Labor Day weekend storm so that will be a big story.
