First on the scene…

We sometimes have this dilemma in this line of work.

We’re riding by in the middle of gathering news in a storm, albeit rain, snow, or sleet.

We pass by a driver either broke down or stuck on the road.

Quite honestly, (and we love all you guys but…) if we’re under a tight deadline, we just can’t stop and help.

I can think of a few times I’ve actually called police or a state trooper to help a stranded motorist because we just couldn’t do it.

But today near Martinsville was different.

Photographer Mike Secrest and I passed a woman stuck in the snow in the Collinsville area.

  Should we stop to help?

Hey it’s only 2:10 pm.  We’re in the 6 o’clock show.  Why not?

We get there and tell her to put in reverse.

  We push.

  Her nice Cadillac goes nowhere.

By this time a guy in a Redskins sweatshirt and another Good Samaritan in a Fieldale-Collinsville Rescue Squad shirt drive up.

“Of course you can help” I tell them.

Fieldale-Collinsville Rescue Squad guy gets a shovel and tries to dig out her rear-passenger side tire.

  Doesn’t work.

Redskins guy pulls out a chain.

  This will do the trick.

By that time another nice guy in a light blue and gray sweatshirt pulls up to help.

So Secrest and I were the first on the scene of a truly terrific news story…

Five guys taking time to help others.
