Emergency workers’ determination impressive at HAZMAT scene

The determination and tenacity of the emergency workers, HAZMAT crews, and state police officers on the scene of this morning’s fatal tractor-trailer accident in Botetourt County was very impressive.

I believe the accident happened at around 2 AM, and then, more than eight hours later when I arrived on the scene, many of the first responders were still going strong.

This means they had no sleep, time away from their families, and, in the cases of any volunteer firefighters on the scene, potentially time away from work.

Some of my sources said one or two of the emergency workers exposed to the thioglycol in the moments following the crash had to be taken to the hospital, although I could not confirm that information for the record.

The smell got to me a little bit and I was only on scene for a short time, I can only imagine how it made some of the first responders feel, like the state police officers who weren’t in HAZMAT gear.

Plus I think it’s important to remember that friends and family of the victim are mourning his loss tonight.  They should be in our prayers.
