So I talked to Danville police today on why no one was answering its Crime Stoppers hotline last night after a media release told us to air it for any tips on the Kolton Karnes gravesite vandalism situation.
Danville police captain Matt Carter is a stand up guy and answered all my questions.
He has recently taken over handling the media in the department and is doing a fine job.
Carter basically said it was the department’s bad.
He said the secretary in the department’s investigations division answers the phone on weekdays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Carter said the system is set up so that when she’s not there, it rings to another phone in the department that’s usually staffed 24 hours.
I asked him if we should just explain to viewers in the future the Crime Stoppers line is only open during working, weekday hours.
He said yes and gave me another number we can use in the future that is staffed 24 hours.
Overall it answered all my questions.
We’ve never known it to happen before but we don’t always test the number before we air it.
Hopefully this got somebody’s attention.
We’ll see.
