I remember hearing it while covering stories at places like city hall, the school board, the county administration building back in 2008.
It was akin in budgetary terms to “the sky is falling.”
But I remember back then, it wasn’t 2009 that terrified them.
Concerned them sure but what really frightened them was the budgetary cycle for 2010 and into 2011.
Where we’re at right now.
And remember two governors have had to “reforecast” the budget for the rest of this year.
Many sources I talked to told me it was going to be bad in 2009, but potentially disastrous in 2010.
Around this time of year you always expect some information to be leaked from someone (i.e. major cuts are coming).
Some people to get mad.
Those people to start calling delegates and senators and all the sudden the cuts aren’t near as bad as first thought.
I know… you’ve seen that story play out before.
I too am tempted to believe that’s what’ll happen here.
The public schools won’t take near the hit we expect them too.
Problem is this year I’ve heard from too many people telling me “the sky is falling.”
Too many good sources of information.
Too many people I trust.
They’re saying there’s no way around it. That public schools are going to take a hit and a big one.
So for the next few weeks, leave any grains of salt you normally take when watching stories on budget turmoil in Richmond off your plate.
Because, after its all said and done, I’m told a lot of people’s stomachs are going to be very upset.
I’m told “the sky is falling” in public education and right now I’m leaning toward believing it.
