Today I’ll have 90 seconds to tell the story of the mother of Aveion Lewis’ latest court appearance.
Make no mistake about it, this is simply the beginning of what’s going to be a very long legal process, quite possibly stretching into the late summer, early fall, or even longer in 2010.
The autopsy on Aveion’s body is still not complete.
There will be future court hearings on evidence, whether to try both Morgan and Brandon Lockett together or separately, whether to have their trials in Roanoke city at all—- maybe moving it out of town.
Guilty pleas are possible.
But a number in Morgan’s family feel she’s innocent (and there’s probably people in Brandon’s corner claiming his innoncence).
I am not going to make any judgements here, not only because it’s my job not to make judgements, but because I’ve seen stories—- where the public feels like its got it all figured out—-go completely the opposite way.
The Locketts are facing 40 years in prison if convicted on the second degree murder charge alone.
I don’t anticipate any plea deals because prosecutors understand the public wants punishment for Aveion’s death.
Bottom line—- this will likely be a long, drawn out process.
And that’s the way it should be.
We need to get to the bottom of what happened to Aveion Lewis.
Morgan and Brandon Lockett deserve fair trials—- that’s the way the system’s set up.
Those of you with your minds already made up may want to step back awhile and take a deep breath.
Patience is key here—- and take it from a guy whose been reporting these types of stories for 11 years now—- things could change.
