Behind the scenes on the Regional Center for Animal Control & Protection story

It’s nearly 8 PM on Thursday night as I write this and I’m mentally exhausted.

A lot of you have already weighed in with your opinions on my investigation into the adoption rate at the Regional Center for Animal Control and Protection.

It was the longest story (five minutes, 38 seconds total) I’ve ever aired in my nearly 12 year career.

It also took the longest amount of time to research, shoot, write, and edit (all total, over one month from start to finish).

The story took six tapes to shoot and the first draft was six pages in length.

I appreciate Bonnie Moore and Teresa Powell for sharing their stories.

I appreciate regional center director Bill Watson for sitting down with me and answering my tough questions.

He’s could have avoided an interview entirely.

But, to his credit, he agreed to go on camera.

I appreciate Amber Perrin sitting down for an interview with her thoughts despite her fears.

I tried to tell the story honestly and fairly.

The reason I love being a journalist is I have to put my work out there for judgment every Monday through Friday.

Some of you believe I’m fair and trustworthy.

Some of you think I’m a knucklehead with an agenda.

Either way I try to keep it interesting and informative.

The bottom line is—- I work for you.

Reporters are the ones who get the access to the mayor and the senator.

Reporters are the ones who get to ask the questions you want asked.

Reporters are the ones who chase the paper trail all day while you’re at work.

That is why I say—- I work for you.

As much as I hated hearing about this, I think it is about time that it was brought to light.  To think that people surrender their pets to this place, thinking that they will have a chance at being adopted, then hearing that in some cases, they are immediately euthanized…..just heartbreaking.  The adoption rate is despicable.  This is supposed to be an agency that works for and on behalf of animals.  As it turns out, they are their worst enemy.  So sad…. I hope your investigation will result in drastic changes for the good of the animals.
