Some local researchers are unlocking the mystery of brain injuries and hoping it leads to cutting edge therapy.
I’ve been talking with the doctors, study participants and people suffering from brain injuries for two stories (airing Thursday & Friday).
The research is so interesting.
1.5 million Americans are diagnosed with Traumatic Brain Injuries (TBI) every year—that’s more than cancer according to the Virginia Tech Carillion Research Institute executive director, Dr. Michael Friedlander.
“Amongst children from about birth to age fourteen in the U.S., TBI is the leading cause of death and the leading cause of disability of children” says Dr. Friedlander.
You’ve heard of TBI in soldiers returning from war and football players—- but it can happen to any of us. Car accidents, a slip and fall, domestic violence, sports, etc. can lead to a TBI and lasting effects like memory loss, trouble controlling emotions and even the way our brain functions.
Doctors call it the silent public health epidemic. You can see the story tonight on WSLS at 6 p.m.
