What’s going on with Gen. McChrystal?

So, all of Washington is waiting to see exactly what President Obama will do with General Stanley McChrystal.

If you haven’t heard, McChrystal is under fire for a series of unflattering statements made by him and his staffers about President Obama, Vice President Biden, and a host of administration officials. It all appeared in a Rolling Stone article and so far McChrystal hasn’t denied any of the quotes.

Already some Democrats have called on Obama to fire McChrystal. No Republican has gone that far, but Sen. John McCain and several other hawkish senators did call the general’s comments inappropriate.

I won’t jump into the debate over whether Gen. McChrystal should or shouldn’t be fired. That is certainly well above my pay grade. But, I do have a couple of thoughts about the article itself.

First, I don’t understand why the General or his staff would have agreed to an interview with a publication that was founded in the 1960s in protest to the war in Vietnam. What brilliant mind thought that would be a good venue? Don’t get me wrong. Rolling Stone has done some great reporting, but it hardly seems like the place for a story that would portray McChrystal in a positive light. And, shouldn’t McChrystal’s staffers have considered that very issue? It’s their job to protect the boss.

Second, what public official, elected or appointed, says the types of things McChrystal and his staffers said to a reporter? I mean really. They ALL knew the reporter was there. They knew he was writing a profile on the general. They knew their conversations were on the record. These remarks make it appear as if these military officials have zero respect for our system and that they are above the Commander-in-Chief.

Finally, you do have to wonder what the real motivations are behind the comments. Was it Gen. McChrystal’s way out of a bad situation, as many have indicated that the war in Afghanistan is only getting worse? Was it McChrystal’s effort to pin the blame for a faltering Afghanistan strategy on the White House? Was it McChrystal’s way to plotting a run for public office? Don’t laugh, as some are speculating that it is.

I frankly have no idea what was going through his head. But, I do believe he had a strategy. McChrystal has been described by many as methodical, regimented, and disciplined. People with those traits who have risen to the rank McChrystal has, don’t make cavalier comments like those that appear in the Rolling Stone article.

Perhaps time will reveal the motivation. But before it does, we’ll know the fate of General Stanley McChrystal, as he meets with President Obama tomorrow.

UPDATE: We now know Gen. McChrystal’s fate. Today, President Obama relieved him of his command.
