Yet again, we have another reason to be proud to be Virginians.
Yes, we’ve been inundated with negative attack ads. It’s almost the only thing running during newscasts and primetime. In fact, I’ve been surprised that we haven’t seen better mix of negative and positive, particularly at this stage in the campaign.
Still, our competitive House races are nothing compared to races in other parts of the country.
I’ve blogged already about some of the silly things that have taken over campaigns in Delaware, Nevada, New York, and California.
But, this weekend we saw silly issues overtaken by nasty behavior. The security detail for a Senate candidate in Alaska handcuffed a reporter who was attempting to ask the candidate questions. A Democratic House member in Colorado slapped the hand of his opponent during a debate. And in Kentucky, the Republican Senate candidate refused to shake the hand of his opponent during a debate. The reason: the Democrat is running an ad talking about the Republican’s past religious convictions.
I wasn’t exaggerating when I said things had turned nasty.
I’ve seen candidates who didn’t really like each other. But, in Virginia, I have never seen them be so dismissive as to not shake the other’s hand… or worse yet… slap it.
Things have gotten a little heated in the 9th and 5th district races. But, they are still civilized and in this day and age that is an important distinction.
