Virginia is purple… deep purple

To anyone who thought Virginia was blue or even light blue, think again. Tuesday night proved that Virginia is a competitive, purple state that is still socially conservative.

How else can you explain Democrat Mark Warner’s Senate victory in 2008 where he won every single congressional district and beat a former governor, attorney general, presidential candidate and RNC chair by 30 points. And, then 12 months later, Republican Bob McDonnell racked up huge margins across the very same commonwealth against an opponent he only beat by 360 votes four years ago?

The only explanation is that Virginia is a competitive state where the independent voters who are happy to swing between the parties decide the elections.

To those who said the GOP was fading in Virginia last year, take note of these returns. And to those who are crowing about the rebirth of the Republican Party tonight, consider the Democrat’s previous wins in 2001, 2005, 2006, and 2008. Neither party has a hold on the Old Dominion.
