The four Republican candidates who hope to face off one on one with President Barack Obama in November have spent the week campaigning in Florida ahead of next Tuesday’s primary, trying to pick up as much support as possible.
Late last week, Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell unexpectedly threw his support behind Mitt Romney a day before the South Carolina primary.
So, are our three Republican congressmen ready to do the same?
It’s a question I put to all three. Here’s our interaction.
Morgan Griffith, (R) Salem
Griffith: “I do not intend to.”
Warren: “Any reason?”
Griffith: “I feel like as a first term congressman I ought to sit back on the sideline and see what the voters of the 6th and 9th districts have to say.”
Warren: “And then support whoever they pick in the primary?”
Griffith: “I will certainly listen to it and take that into consideration.”
Rep. Bob Goodlatte, (R) Roanoke County
Goodlatte: “I will look forward to supporting the nominee of the party, but I have not endorsed anyone.”
Warren: “So you don’t intend to endorse until the voters have spoken?”
Goodlatte: “At this point I don’t intend to, but we will continue to watch the primaries closely.”
Rep. Robert Hurt, (R) Chatham
Hurt: “”I have enjoyed watching the field develop and look forward to continuing to do so. I have not picked a candidate.”
Warren: “Do you intend to do so before the primary in Virginia?”
Hurt: “I don’t have any intention to do that at this point.”
Virginia’s primary is March 6th, and only Rromney and Ron Paul qualified to be on the ballot.
And, it’s interesting to note that Rep. Goodlatte served in the House under then Speaker Newt Gingrich. And, even though Gingrich served in the House from Georgia, he is now a Virginia resident.
