Sidewalk project seems neverending!

There’s a road construction project in Roanoke that’s driving me crazy. Really, it’s not road construction, it’s sidewalk beautification.

I know, it sounds silly to be annoyed by a beautification project, right? I mean, it is intended to improve the quality of life in a specific neighborhood and should eventually make the drive through that area better for everyone who takes that route to and from downtown.

But, that gets to the heart of my annoyance. This project has been going on for months, and I’m not exaggerating. How long does it take to widen some sidewalks by pouring new concrete and laying some bricks? Oh, and they’re putting in some new gutters and plants. Add another week. Still the entire thing shouldn’t take more few weeks at the most… right?

But instead, if you have driven by the new Cotton Mill project near Jefferson Center, you know that this project has been going on since at least May… if not April. Yes, we are on month three. That’s 12 weeks of blocked roads, dust, bumps, and general disruption.

Every day I think, surely the road will be open today… and every day I’m disappointed. How can the city devote that much manpower to what should be a fairly easy project? Is one city block worth this much effort? Think about all the other blocks that would just like to have a level sidewalk. How much is all this work costing?

The new WalMart on 220 appears to have risen out of the ground in a matter of days. I hope for WalMart’s sake, its sidewalks go in just as fast.
