Sex scandals nothing new… even for Virginia

This week, Republican South Carolina Governor Mark Sanford rocked the political world revealing that he has been having a year long affair with a woman from Argentina.

This sex scandal created a particular firestorm because Sanford disappeared a week ago. No one knew where he was… not his wife, staff, the state’s lt. governor… no one.

South Carolina isn’t alone in this sex scandal. Lately, leaders in Louisiana, Nevada, Idaho, Florida, and New York have faced allegations of varying degrees of sexual misconduct.

And Virginia has had its share of scandals as well.

Most recently, in 2002 Republican House Speaker Vance Wilkins was forced to resign after allegations that he made unwanted advances to a former staffer and paid her to keep quiet.

And two decades ago, former Democratic Gov. and Sen. Chuck Robb had his problems as well. Much like Sanford, Robb was being mentioned as a potential presidential candidate back then. That was until it was rumored that he had an affair with a former Miss Virginia.
