Saying goodbye to Walter Cronkite…

It’s a sad night for the country… Walter Cronkite has passed away.

I never met Cronkite, but I did once get a voice message from him. In 2002, I was one of two people to receive the Walter Cronkite Award for Individual Achievement.

One day, I came into work to see the red light blinking on my telephone. It was a message from none other than Walter Cronkite. He called to congratulate me and compliment my work. Can you imagine my excitement… Walter Cronkite was giving little Jay Warren in Roanoke, Virginia a pat on the back.

He sounded just like he did on TV. I had to listen to it three times to make sure it wasn’t a friend playing a prank on me. If only I had been at my desk to personally answer the call.

Unfortunately, that year, Cronkite wasn’t able to make it to Las Vegas for the awards presentation. I would have loved to have met him. But, his phone message was good enough for me.

Walter Cronkite will be missed!
