Last week, I wrote a blog entry about the Washington Post’s endorsement of Creigh Deeds in the Democratic primary for governor and wondering if the back and forth between Brian Moran and Terry McAuliffe would benefit Deeds. There’s more evidence of that tonight in a new poll.
The Democratic primary for governor appears to be anyone’s race.
A new poll by Public Policy Polling now shows State Sen. Creigh Deeds with the lead at 27%, followed by Terry McAuliffe at 24% and former Del. Brian Moran at 22%.
The race is in the margin of error, meaning it’s a true tossup.
But, most significant… the big rise in support for Deeds, who’s gone from tied for last to first.
I talked with Sen. Deeds, via a satellite window paid for by the Deeds for Governor campaign, about this latest poll.
Here’s a portion of the interview.
WARREN: “It seems the momentum seems to be on your side.”
DEEDS: “Jay, we have defied expectations throughout this race and this poll is another indication that the momentum is on our side.”
WARREN: “You got the endorsement of the Washington Post. You’re a rural state senator and I think that surprised a lot of people. How much of that are we seeing in this poll? How much of an impact is that having?”
DEEDS: “When the Washington Post says I am the best prepared person to be governor, not just the best candidate, but the governor. I can be a governor for all of Virginia. I can bring together all of the interests in Virginia and create prosperity throughout the state that’s a pretty strong statement.”
WARREN: “But part of the reason they endorsed you are some rather courageous stands you’ve taken in terms of gun rights which could hurt you in a general election and in terms of raising taxes to pay for transportation. They’re endorsement was in pat because of your courage. Is that going to hurt you later on down the road?
WARREN: “You know, I don’t know. I have tried throughout the time I have been in the legislature to do the right thing. I don’t think doing the right thing ever hurts.”
The primary is one week away, June 9th.
